William Henry Harrison: Wonderful North Bend Mantel Clock. 28" x 17" x 4 1/4" ogee, weight-driven mantel clock with interior yellow paper label of Smith & Brothers Clock Establishment of New York City. The door has a lower panel that contains a 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" reverse painting on glass depicting the Harrison log cabin and cider barrel at "North Bend", the Ohio home of the Hero of Tippecanoe. The painting is fully intact with only minor chipping of no consequence. The use of silver leaf for the background on the caption panel is especially striking. The clockworks and gears are made of brass. There is some minor loss to the original painted dial. There is also some normal chipping and pitting to the veneer. We are only aware of one other example which is not as nice as this one. Contrary to other "political clocks", this one can definitively be dated to a specific presidential election. We have not attempted to set it up and see if it works. It will require Third Party Shipping.
