    Description

William Henry Harrison: Phenomenal Sulphide Portrait Doorknob.
Truly remarkable "paperweight"-style doorknob with sulphide portrait of "Harrison" facing left (his name appears on the bottom right of the bust) . Attributed to the Pittsburgh maker Bakewell, Page & Bakewell. We have seen a similar item featuring facing busts of Monroe & Harrison. Minor surface scratches. The knob measures 2.5" across and is mounted to brass hardware. The overall length is 5". When the light hits the sulphide just right, it produces a luminosity that is nothing short of entrancing. Infinitely rarer than the large, pewter-rim sulphide medallion for Harrison and so much more desirable, in our opinion. Pictured in Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.'s Running for President: The Candidates and Their Images, volume 1, page 158.
