    Description

William Henry Harrison: Inauguration Brush. Political brushes seem to have been popular in the 1828 to 1840 period. We have seen examples for John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, William Henry Harrison and Martin Van Buren. This is the only inauguration brush we have seen and may have been used to dust off the overcoats of attendees after the arduous carriage trip to the nation's capital. It measures 2 1/2" x 9" x 2". The top consists of four layers of veneers of various woods. The top layer has the inscription "Wm. H. Harrison March 4th 1841." What is truly amazing about this piece is the fact that the entire inscription is composed of inlaid wood, similar to a "dotted script". Pinhead-size holes were made and filled in with corresponding round pieces of lighter colored wood. The inscription and ornamentation is slightly raised and can be felt if one runs ones hand lightly across the surface. It appears to be in like-new condition, hardly ever used, lacking only seven tufts of bristles, with just some slight wear on either end of the top of the handle.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
