    Description

Washington and Jefferson: Especially Nice Liverpool Pitcher with Portrait of George Washington as President and Famous Jefferson Quote. The factory workers in Liverpool were not highly educated (witness the notorious "James Madison" jug with portrait of Thomas Jefferson) and often mixed and matched transfers with American subjects when making pottery for that market. It is likely that most of the standard motifs remained in use until the War of 1812 effectively ending the export of these familiar jugs to America. The principal transfer on this example pictures Washington crowned with laurels by Liberty, and clearly dates from his presidency, with the surrounding links representing the States including Kentucky (admitted 1792), but not Tennessee (admitted 1796.) On the reverse is a vessel flying the American flag, with the optimistic slogan "Success to Trade". Below the pouring spout is a Federal eagle with the date 1802 and "Peace, Commerce and Honest Friendship with all Nations - Entangling alliances with None - JEFFERSON". Choice condition on this exceptionally appealing Liverpool pitcher. Height: 8.625".
