    Description

Ulysses S. Grant: Copper Wheel Engraved Crystal Decanter. 9 3/4" crystal or lead glass decanter with fluted, tapered neck and copper wheel engraved decoration on the front depicting an American eagle below four stars. Beneath the eagle is a scroll inscribed "Ulysses S. Grant" and the date "1863". Appears to be hand-blown. There is no documentation that accompanies the piece, but it definitely appears of that vintage. Given the quality of the workmanship, we feel confident it was a presentation piece or part of a service. It may have been produced by the Dorflinger Glass Works who produced crystal services used in the Lincoln White House and are known to have presented a set of crystal glassware to President & Mrs. Grant in 1871. This may be part of that set. Grant's most important victory in the Civil War, the capture of Vicksburg, occurred in 1863 and contributed greatly to his promotion the following year as Lieutenant General, signified by the four stars. This decanter was both a homage to Grant and a token of appreciation from a grateful public.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
