    Description

The Finest Zachary Taylor "Forget Me Not" Box We Have Ever Seen, in Virtually Mint Condition. The manufacturing company apparently made these boxes in the late 1840s to early 1850s, as we have seen them for four presidents: Washington (always a popular subject), Andrew Jackson (died 1845), John Quincy Adams (died 1848), and Zachary Taylor (died 1850). It is uncertain whether they were intended to honor the deceased presidents exclusively, or to house a remembrance of a departed loved one, such as a lock of hair (we have seen one example with a lock of hair under the glass on the reverse side). Often these are found with cracked glass, and the gold-leaf paper trim is almost always worn or partially missing. It takes seeing a choice example like this one to realize just what a lovely little item this is! Note the brass-framed mirror on the interior of the lid, and the simulated gold edges of pages, giving the box the appearance of a closed book. Measures 1.75" x 2.7" and ".625" thick.
