Spectacular 1868 Grant & Colfax Campaign Wall Plaque. By the same manufacturer as the more familiar 1872 version, but, strangely, much rarer (in general, 1872 Grant items are much tougher that those of 1868; this is a notable exception). Made in virtually identical style to the 1872 variety, except, of course, that the engraved text is completely different: "In God we trust"; "The Union must and shall be preserved"; "The People's Choice elected Nov. 3, 1868"; "Love and tears for the Blue, Tears and Love for the Gray"; "Let us have peace." Around the busts, "For President, Ulysses S. Grant of Illinois Vice President Schuyler Colfax of Indiana." This beauty is in choice condition. There is some "bronze disease" in the nooks and crannies of the relief images. It would be best to have the case opened, and any competent conservator could easily treat this condition. In the meantime, it is a very slow-moving process and should not concern a prospective buyer.
