Polk & Dallas: Folk Art Janus Jugate Cane. Some of the most interesting pieces of political Americana are in the folk art category. This 32" hickory cane is a prime example. The knob or handle has carved busts of Polk & Dallas, Janus-style. The shaft below Polk has a carved rooster and the inscription "Polk the Young Hickory". Below Dallas is the inscription "Dallas & Victory". The bottom half of Polk's nose is missing and there appears to be a knot or old repair/inlay on his right cheek. There is a hole at the top of Dallas' head. In spite of the defects, it has a lot going for it and is truly one-of-a-kind!

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
