Description

Mary Todd Lincoln: Personal China. This is a lovely soft-paste cup and saucer decorated in pink and gold with a Greek key pattern. The cup has a large letter "L" on the front. The underside of the cup is marked "China Hall Philadelphia Kerr." The cup is 4.5" across (including the handle) x 2.75", and the saucer is 5.5" across. While Mrs. Lincoln was still in the White House, she ordered a set of china from J. K. Kerr, known as the "buff and gold" set. These were delivered shortly before the President's assassination and may have seen limited use in the White House. Mrs. Lincoln then ordered some supplemental pieces from Kerr. Given the similarity of the design, this cup and saucer may have been part of the supplemental order. It is identical to a set of two cups and saucers from the Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith Estate sold some years back in Cincinnati. Many of the pieces in the Beckwith Estate traced back to Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln and had passed to Robert Todd Lincoln and his wife, Mary Harlan. A small white accretion can be seen near the rim where the handle is connected, and the gold-colored accents have light scratching and wear. In lovely condition.
