Lincoln Assassination: Washington, D.C. Newspaper Announcing the Assassination. For sundry reasons, collectors seem to focus on early editions of the "New York Herald" that report on the assassination. That paper has been reprinted twice. Articles have been written on the numerous "Extra" editions that were published as news reports filtered in. Being contrarians, we have always thought that the most significant paper should be the one issued in the nation's capital, the site of Ford's Theatre and the assassination. Here it is. This is a double-glazed issue of the "Daily Morning Chronicle" [Washington, D.C.] for April 15, 1865. The first two pages report on the death of Lincoln and the attempt on the lives of Seward, father and son. The second page has a notice from General C. C. Augur offering a reward of $10,000 for the capture of the unnamed perpetrators. It also reports on Lee's Surrender. According to the front page, this example is the "Third Edition" of that day's paper and includes reports from the previous two editions. Booth was the prime suspect and the paper refutes rumors of his capture. Minor tape repairs on rough bottom edge; overall, very fine.
