    Description

Lewis Cass: A Wonderful Cast Iron Stove from the 1848 Presidential Campaign. Definitely an 1848 campaign item, as a companion piece picturing his opponent Zachary Taylor was also produced. The front features a large (14-inch) high-relief portrait of an immediately-recognizable Cass, with streamer above reading, "Genl. Lewis Cass Born 1787." The stove is complete and in excellent condition. Dimensions: 32" tall x 33" wide, by 26" deep. Repainted to what is presumably the original black color. Has logo of the maker, John Morrison of Troy, New York. On back "Patented design 1848," along with a high relief case of flowers. For accuracy we note one minor small crack in the metal near the bottom of the back.

We are aware of one, possibly two, other examples of the Cass stove, and but a single example of the Taylor. Clearly among the rarest and most impressive of 19th century political display items-something to build a collection room around! From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.
