    Description

John Quincy Adams: Outstanding "Be Firm for Adams" Sewing Box from the 1828 Election. Portrait of Adams under glass on the underside of the lid. It is hard to determine whether most early 3-D items depicting presidents and statesmen were of an expressly political nature. But here there is no doubt, as a similar version for Jackson, Adams's 1828 opponent, was also issued. These boxes are notoriously hard to find in such nice condition. The wording, stamped on the pin cushion and hence vulnerable to wear and tear, is bold and clear. Overall the box is in exceptional condition, with only light edge wear. The lid, originally hinged at the back, is clearly detached as seen on nearly all of the boxes, but this is easily restored if one felt the need. A great early item for a president for whom very few campaign novelties of any type are available. Measures 5"x 3.5"x 1.75".
