John Quincy Adams: Colorful Thread Box. Even though women could not vote, they did involve themselves in the political process. The circa 1824-1828 thread box is evidence of that involvement. During the Jackson and Adams contests, various utilitarian objects were manufactured for use on the domestic front. This 4.75" x 3.5" x 2.25" pasteboard box was used by an Adams partisan. The velvet pincushion top has crossed American flags, a wreath and laurel branch (now worn away) and the slogan "Adams Forever". An engraving of Adams is mounted underneath the lid, behind glass. As is typical, the silk ribbon hinges have become detached and one is missing altogether. The box is covered with embossed gold foil and rainbow-hued paper. This is a fine example of a key political item from the early days of our democracy.
