Description

John Quincy Adams: Circa 1828 Thread Box with His Portrait. These lovely boxes are particularly popular with collectors because they are among the earliest display items which were unquestionably made to promote political candidates. A padded velvet pin cushion on the top reads "Be Firm For Adams" in red letters, while a portrait of Adams under glass appears on the inside of the lid. The exterior is covered with rainbow-colored paper and trimmed with embossed gold-colored paper borders. A lovely sentimental handwritten inscription on the bottom of the box dated July 13, 1830, gives this item added charm! It measures approximately 4 7/8" x 2 3/4" x 3 1/2".

Condition: The lid is separated from the box along the fragile paper "hinge". The vulnerable cushion on top has typical soiling and moderate wear; however, the usually obliterated slogan is still readable. Overall, an above grade example.
