John Quincy Adams: Campaign Make-Up Kit. Similar in construction and appearance to the popular thread boxes issued in the election of 1828, this box was used for make-up. It measures 5" x 3.5" x 2.5". The top of the lid has a velvet insert depicting wreaths and crossed flags, inscribed "Victory For Adams". The colors (red, blue, yellow and green) are unusually strong. The interior of the box has a raised platform and a circular hole for placement of a ceramic dish (still present, but with some chipping). The underside of the lid has an engraved portrait of "John Q. Adams" under glass. The sides of the box and the lid are covered in gold, embossed paper trim. The condition is way-above-average for the type. Lacks ribbon hinges, as nearly all do. This is a great display piece for a "tough" candidate, dating from what is considered the first "modern campaign" with popular vote counts and partisan paraphernalia.
