    Description

John Hale: Glass and Punched Tin Lantern. Rare artifact for the Free Soil candidate of 1852, Senator John Hale of New Hampshire. 12" tall (not counting handle) four-sided parade lantern with black oxidized surface. Three sides have glass panels which lift out. The fourth side is a solid tin panel with punched letters reading "HALE" vertically which also slides upward. The candle holder is missing, but all three glass panels are intact and undamaged. There are also four wires or ribs which which encircle the piece on three sides, providing protection. These are spot-soldered. Some scattered light rusting, as is normal. We have seen two or three other examples where the name Hale is sideways and find this format preferable. This, along with the Pierce lantern we are offering, came out of a New Hampshire estate some fifteen years ago. Both Hale and Pierce "hailed" from New Hampshire.
