John C. Fremont: A Very Rare Salt Print Photo Presented by Fremont to his 1856 Running Mate William L. Dayton. Fremont is one of the most significant American historical figures of the mid-19th Century. He was the legendary "Pathfinder of the West," and later a Union general in the Civil War. However, perhaps his greatest importance was as the first presidential nominee of the fledgling Republican Party which emerged from the ashes of the hopelessly fragmented Whigs.

A very old, possibly 19th c. label on verso reads "John C. Fremont / given by him to William L. Dayton" in black ink, and, in a different hand in pencil, "Photo by S. Root 1856." Salt prints are much rarer and more desirable than albumen photos of this era, especially when as strong and bold as this one. A few tiny surface chips in the field are noted for accuracy. Vintage frame is probably original. 7.75" x 10" as framed.
