James Monroe: Extremely Rare White House China Dinner Plate. To serious White House china collectors, this is one of the most collectable of styles! It actually bridges three presidencies, as this service was known to have been in use as late as Jackson's presidency. However, Monroe ordered it in 1817 from Dagoty & HonorĂ©, Paris. The eagle matches exactly Monroe's dessert service, now held by Winterthur. The design features an eagle clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, with red, white, and blue shield and "E Pluribus Unum" streamer across his chest. The eagle is superimposed over a starry night sky, which is being eclipsed by radiating rays of the sun. Display appearance is beautiful, although there are two fine hairlines, which join to form a lop-side "T." One is diagonal and runs partway across the center design, beginning ½" from the inner gold leaf circle at 11:00 and running to 1" from the circle at 3:15. The other hairline starts at the inner gold circle at 6:00, and runs up through the eagle's tail and left wing to meet the first one. Neither is terribly obtrusive, and given the profound rarity of the item can be easily lived with. Diameter 8.625".
