James Madison: Portrait Pitcher. 7.75" high, a rich white Liverpool pitcher with a transfer portrait engraving and a riband above with, "James Maddison [sic], President of the United States of America". The portrait is actually that of Thomas Jefferson, re-used by the industrious Liverpool makers who either did not have a likeness of Madison, or more likely, had no idea how Madison actually looked. In the pre-photographic days when this pitcher was made, most people had little or no sense of the appearance of prominent persons. The other side of the pitcher has a trophy-of-arms with a cartouche reading, "Peace, Plenty and Independence", surmounted by an eagle and flanked by allegorical figures. Under the lip of the pitcher is an early representation of the American eagle from the Seal of the United States. The lip has some very minor roughness due to use and there are a couple of very slight chips to the inside rim. There is also a small spider crack near the handle, else, choice. From the Edward C. Gillette Collection.
