James K. Polk: Fine Reverse Painting on Glass. In the category of reverse paintings on glass, examples for dark horse candidate James K. Polk are not only the rarest, but the most desirable. This example came out of a Pennsylvania estate auction. It is patterned after the ubiquitous Currier, Kellogg and Baillie lithographs that depict the candidate seated beneath draperies with the Capitol in the distance. This one measures 10" x 14" and is housed in a period frame. It is extremely colorful. There is some loss to the chin area which has been masterfully camouflaged through a support board of the same color. There is also a very small crack in the glass in the lower left corner. The overall display appearance is excellent. The only other example we know of sold in the Chick Harris Sale for over $4,000 more than a decade ago.
