Description

James G. Blaine: A Marvelous Cigar Lighter Honoring the 1884 GOP Presidential Candidate, Circa 1880s. Although dismissed by some collectors as a relatively unimportant presidential candidate, Blaine was a towering political figure of his day. The "Plumed Knight" of Maine not only ran for president, but served as Speaker of the House and Secretary of State. Republican organizations named after him were common well into the 1900s, as were products and advertising images honoring him. This rare copper, tin and steel cigar lighter was issued by the makers of the James G. Blaine Cigar, "The Greatest of Them All". His name and slogan are colorfully emblazoned on the base, while all four sides of the protective metal shade around the wick are perforated, so when the wick was lighted "Jas. G. Blaine Cigar" shone forth. Minor surface wear. The kerosene reservoir has been neatly re-attached to the supporting stem which itself is ever-so-slightly bent to one side. Without a doubt, one of the rarest and most appealing three-dimensional political display items of that era. Height 12.25".
