Historical Staffordshire: Abolitionist Plates. We offer two matching pieces of historical Staffordshire related to the abolition movement. The first is a 10.5" plate with light blue transfer. The central design lists various freedoms specified in the Constitution. The border has four eagles, the scales of justice, two pro-liberty statements ("Of One Blood Are All Nations of Men" and "We Hold That All Men Are Created Equal") and a memorial to Owen P. Lovejoy, "The First Martyr to American Liberty at Alton, Nov. 7, 1837". It has some discoloration and normal wear and came from the Paul Richards Collection. It likely dates from the 1840's. We are selling it with a 4" cup plate of similar design, in mint condition, also ex: Richards Collection. These are listed as Larson #666.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
