    Description

Henry Clay: Striking Stogie Case in Golden Orange. 2 7/8" x 5 1/2" papier-mâché stogie case titled "Henry Clay candidad for 1844" with "American Statesman" verse below. Unlike the ubiquitous color version, this one is black on an absolutely lovely orange/gold background with gilt trim. At some point in the distant past, a weight was placed on it which caused some lateral cracks to form on both sides with associated flattening of the lower third, visible when viewed in cross-section from the side. The components stayed in place, however, adhered to the leather interior bellows. It does lack the embossed paper insert. If visible appeal and rarity mean anything to you, this is a great "candidate" for your collection!
