    Description

Henry Clay: Magnificent Full Color 1844 Papier Mâché Snuff Box. Undoubtedly produced by the same maker as the familiar flat stogie cases, but unique in this form. Around the perimeter is the slogan: "The American/ Statesman" and below Clay's portrait is the legend:

"Come every Whig your influence bring
    On this eventful day,
And make the Western rallies sing
    With shouts for Henry Clay"

Presidential and campaign snuff boxes have long been considered among the most desirable of political artifacts of this early era. To our taste, this striking box must rank as one of the premier examples of its genre. 3.375" in diameter. Typical minor surface crazing, otherwise excellent condition.
