Henry Clay: Folk Art Campaign Painting. 28" x 35.25" oil on canvas depicting a half-length bust of Henry Clay clutching a scroll inscribed with Whig campaign slogans. The scroll reads: "Principles of the Whig Party. A sound national currency regulated by the will and authority of the nation. An adequate revenue with fair protection to American industry. Just restraints on the executive power, embracing further restrictions on the exercise of the veto. A faithful administration of the public domain... [some additional words obscured by his hand]." Two columns appear on the right. The wooden stretcher is signed on the bottom: "H. C. Arnold P-t [painter]". Rip in lower part of canvas repaired on verso with 2.5" x 2" piece of black cloth adhesive tape. Light overall craquelure. The varnish has yellowed over the years. Could benefit from a light cleaning, but we leave that up to the winning bidder. Housed in an old gilt frame. Unlike many historical portraits of American politicians, this example is patently a presidential campaign item and a wonderful display piece.
