Henry Clay: Berlin Wool Work Needlepoint Portrait. Impressive standing portrait of Henry Clay, copied from the John Neagle painting of 1842. He strikes a presidential pose, pointing to a globe and billowing flags. Other design elements include a plow, anvil, cattle and a sailing ship on the ocean. Vivid colors, including the use of metallic silver thread for the stars on the flag. The image itself measures 38" x 48", while the overall size including blank canvas is 45" x 52". Clay retired from the Senate in 1842, but re-entered politics in 1844, making his final run for the Presidency. This glorious textile is in superb condition with vibrant colors of every hue. There are some nail holes and tears in the blank border. We suggest the winning bidder have it mounted to a wooden stretcher with or without frame, displaying it like a painting. It will be shipped rolled up.
