    Description

Grant & Colfax: Jugate Photographic Display Piece. Most unusual campaign item from 1868. It was produced by engraver R. H. Norris of Paterson, New Jersey and features albumen portraits of Washington, Lincoln, Grant and Colfax set within an oval, silver-plated copper plaque, engraved: "In God We Trust. The Union must, and shall, be preserved. The People's Choice. 1868. For President, Ulysses S. Grant. Vice-President, Schuyler Colfax. Unconditional Surrender 'Let Us Have Peace'". A similar piece was made that had raised copper busts, rather than albumen portraits. An accompanying copy of a period newspaper advertisement from Norris exclaims: "... Photographic or Metal Copies can now be had at J. W. Ensign's, 132 Congress Street, or at the works, No. 9 Hotel Street." Housed in a period, deeply recessed frame with original bubble glass. The gilt liner has been neatly repaired in several places and repainted. Noticeably rarer than the all-metal version.
