    Description

Grant & Colfax and Grant & Wilson: Jugate High Relief Plaques. Impressive jugate plaques in support of the 1868 and 1872 Republican Presidential candidates. Copper three-dimensional busts of Washington, Lincoln, Grant and Colfax are mounted on velvet background, within plain brass frames. This all against an oval silvered copper plate elaborately engraved with designs and campaign slogans. The 1868 plaque is copyrighted and produced by R. H. Norris of Paterson, New Jersey. It appears to have been produced during the presidential campaign, even though it confidently states "Elected 1868 Novr. 3rd". Like the 1868 version, the 1872 example features smaller high-relief busts of Lincoln and Washington at the top, but with Grant and Wilson below, each on black backgrounds and surrounded by a brass frame. The ovals are set into a larger oval of plated copper which is elaborately engraved with campaign slogans and patriotic motifs: "In God is our strength"; "First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of our countrymen"; "Unanimously nominated at Philadelphia, June 6th, 1872"; "As we did in '68 so we will in '72"; "Cheers from our Army and Navy, Cheers from our Red, White, and Blue"; "General Grant has never been defeated and he never will be - Horace Greeley"; "Copyright Secured August 2nd 1872." The Greeley quote is a remark he made about Grant during the Civil War which came back to haunt him in the 1872 campaign. Both plaques are mounted on velvet in modern 17" x 15" frames. Both are wonderful examples of 3-D political Americana!

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
