George Washington: Meissen Cup and Saucer. In 19th century porcelain, Meissen is the preeminent name. They produced commemorative china for the American market in the early 1800s, all of which is quite rare. One of their more attractive efforts is this circa 1850 cup and saucer depicting Washington, Franklin and an American eagle. The cup measures 4.5" tall by 4" wide. It is heavily gilded, after the fashion of the time, set against a royal blue ground. The cup is in exceptional condition. The 7" saucer appears to have had restoration, although we are unsure of the damage that was corrected.
