George Washington: Marvelous Piece of Early Scrimshaw from a Whaling Ship, Picturing Washington. Poor Washington seems to have been eclipsed in the mind of the carver, however, by a pretty young lady who forms the central image. Above is a disquieting scene of a giant whale tossing a ship, and at the top the name "Solon" (which may refer to the seamen or the vessel on which he was serving) and the date 1846. An especially well-accomplished piece of whalebone scrimshaw, measuring 1.125" x 8.75".
