    Description

George Washington: Inaugural Shoe Buckle. This silvered brass shoe buckle dates from the 1790s. It is around 2.5" square and curved to fit the contours of a colonial-era shoe. A displayed American eagle with olive branch and arrows appears in an oval cartouche at the top. A bust of Washington appears on the bottom. Both the bust and eagle closely resemble the design elements of a 1792 United States coin. We feel this fashion accessory was likely issued around that time, possibly to commemorate Washington's second inauguration in 1793. A similar design was issued in 1800 after Washington's death. The New York Historical Society owns a pair of those, made of silver. This is the only one of these we have seen, although they were made in pairs, so there may be another one out there somewhere.
