    Description

George Washington: A Superb Early Bronze Bust, Probably circa 1780s - 1790s. Mounted on original base incorporating bronze elements and two colors of marble. Affixed to the base is a bronze plaque in French: "LIBERTAS SE [Son Excellencé] George Washington General en Chef, des armies des Etats Unis de Amerique." It is not surprising that such a well-made sculpture was produced in France, as work of this quality would largely be beyond the capabilities of American craftsman of that era. We have seen a very similar bust of Franklin, who remained a favorite in France after he delighted French society during his days in Paris negotiating an end to the Revolutionary War. Washington and all things American were popular in France during the Revolutionary period of the 1790s and, although the pieces is unsigned, style, quality, and subject matter strongly support dating it to the 1780s -1790s. Beautiful condition with rich patina of age. Overall height 11.75", bust only 6.125".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
