    Description

George Washington: A Rare Transfer on this Strawberry Luster Liverpool Memorial Pitcher. On the reverse side is American War of 1812 naval hero Captain Jones of the Macedonia, but even without that transfer this pitcher could be dated to the post-War era due to its bulbous shape and strawberry luster trim. The lucrative export of Liverpool pottery with American themes was interrupted by the War of 1812 and resumed up though the 1820s, although on a much more modest scale. This lovely example, in virtually mint condition, features a most unusual transfer of Washington with the words, "Gen. Washington. Departed this life Dec. 14th 1799 AE 67. And the tears of a Nation watered his grave." The transfer itself could well date from the mourning period shortly after Washington's death, although we have not seen it on any pre-1812 creamware (or any other post-1812 example, for that matter). Ex-personal collection: Rex Stark. Height 6.25", rather a large size for this form.
