Description
George Washington: A Liverpool Creamware Pitcher with Two Washington Transfers. The principal transfer is one of the nicest of Washington. It shows a clearly-recognizable standing Washington, along with Lady Liberty, beside a map of the newly independent American nation. Liberty carries a "liberty cap" on a pole over her shoulder. Above are an angel sounding a trumpet in tribute to Washington and carrying a wreath for his head, to which is attached a streamer with his name, and a stylized version of an early American flag with a federal eagle in the center. The reverse side features similar devices around a tribute to Washington's generalship.While this pitcher has a very presentable appearance as a cabinet piece, it does have condition issues. There are several long fine cracks, which fortunately do not affect the principal transfer, and with only one running through the reverse transfer. The upper portion of the handle is restored, as well as the pouring spout and an area below the spout and running down to the base. This is probably a very old restoration, as the restored areas are a slightly yellower shade. Modern restorers have been able to match the color more precisely. Height 8.25".
