George Abbott Hall: Leather Wallet 1762. Colonial Charleston, South Carolina Leather Wallet. George Abbot Hall, a native of England, was a patriot of the American Revolution. In 1780, he was exiled from Charleston to St. Augustine, Florida by British authorities because of his avowed pro-American views. In 1786, he purchased Lowndes Grove Plantation in Charleston and built a plantation house to replace the one burned down during the Revolution. We are offering his red leather wallet. It measures 5" x 6.25" when folded and has an escutcheon on the silver lock-plate reading: "George Abbot Hall So. Carolina 1762". The interior contains two sections including a bi-fold compartment. The condition is very fine. It is accompanied by a carte-de-visite from Devoe's New Gallery in Charleston showing a painting of Hall as he appeared in 1783. Also included is an old photograph of the wallet, clearly a cherished family heirloom, with a notation on the back describing it as "George Washington's Wallet - given by him to Geo. Abbott Hall." Hall family members were related to George Washington through the Ball Family (Washington's mother was Mary Ball), although we cannot ascertain if Hall actually knew Washington in 1762, the date inscribed on the wallet. Finally, we include photocopies of the Hall "pedigree " showing the relation to the Ingraham Family. The wallet was included in an archive of Ingraham Family material obtained from a Florida estate that also had material owned by naval hero Duncan Nathaniel Ingraham.
