    Description

Franklin Pierce: Glass and Punched Tin Lantern. Very rare 12" tall (not counting handle) four-sided lantern issued on behalf of the 1852 Democratic candidate for President, Franklin Pierce. Three sides have clear glass panels which lift out. The fourth side has a solid tin panel with punched lettering which reads "Pierce." sideways, from bottom to top. Apparently, at time of manufacture, this panel was inserted upside-down, so it does not slide out completely and reads bottom-to-top, rather than to top-to-bottom. There are also eight diamond designs cut out at the top of the name panel, corresponding to diamond designs in the sloping roof. The candle holder is still present. There are four wires or ribs have encircle the piece on three sides, providing protection. These are spot-soldered (one solder is broken). The glass panels are fully intact. Great condition overall. This, along with the Hale lantern we are offering, came out of a New Hampshire estate fifteen years ago. We don't recall seeing any other Pierce lanterns in our 50+ years of collecting, although there may be one or two others extant. This is a Pierce "pierced" tin lantern.
