    Description

Fillmore & Donelson: Exceedingly Rare and Important Punched Tin Lantern. Among early political display items, these lanterns form an elite category, and we consider the present example to be one of the most important political items we have ever been privileged to handle! Over the years, we have seen examples for John Quincy Adams, Jackson, Van Buren, and Clay, but not more than two or three for any of these. It is probably safe to assume that the total population of known examples is fewer than twenty. This particular example has a highly distinguished history, having for decades been in the collection of Kenton Broyles. In the mid-1990s, we purchased this lantern from him and subsequently sold it to Chick Harris. Between them, these two legendary collectors, who assembled two of the top three 3-D collections in the history of the hobby, owned exactly one early punched tin lantern! The lantern offered here is especially important because it is the only one we can recall seeing which touts both the presidential and vice presidential candidates, and hence is probably a campaign item (as opposed to perhaps having been made for a rally honoring a visit by the named person). Furthermore, it honors Fillmore, for whom display items are all but unknown (unlike the others named above, for whom a variety of items were made). Thirdly, it is of a unique and clever form, a half cylinder with glass on the flat side. The shape would have been much more comfortable to carry than a fully cylindrical version, which would have to be held awkwardly away from the body. The flat back would also allow it to be on a wall if one wished. This lantern is in outstanding original condition, and with the attractive star motif, it has tremendous display appeal as well as historic importance. Height 11.5", depth 4.25". From the collection of U. I. "Chick" Harris.
