    Description

Daniel Webster: 1836 Election Broadsheet. 17" x 23" broadsheet (printed both sides) titled "Freeman Awake!! Election Next Monday" urging support of the Democratic Whig Republican Ticket" of Daniel Webster and Francis Granger. The strategy that year was to run multiple Whig candidates (Webster, Harrison, White and Mangum) to chip away support from Van Buren and possibly throw the election into the House of Representatives. It didn't work. Granger was also Harrison's running mate. At this time, there was no standardized date for the presidential election. Each state decided for itself. In this case, Massachusetts selected Monday, November 14th. The reverse side is titled: "Whigs Do Your Duty Monday Next, November 14th." There is no name of a newspaper and this was apparently issued as a two-sided broadside. It even has sealing wax remnants on the verso for posting. Minor loss here-and-there. Hinged to a mat and nicely framed, but sold without the glass. Like Henry Clay, Daniel Webster sought the presidency his whole life, but was "doomed" to greatness!
