Britain's King George III: A Remarkable Large Liverpool Creamware Jug Which Also Features American Patriotic Motifs, Probably a Special Order for an American Loyalist. Central image is a transfer we have never before encountered, featuring the British monarchy during the American Revolution and a figure of Britannia. Below: "The Liberty that crowns Britannia's Isle And makes her barren Rocks & her Bleak Mountains Smile...Addison." On the reverse side is a colorful image of the vessel Eliza, flying an American flag. Below the pouring spout are the initials, "RMG" along with a Federal-style eagle. Other than expected wear to the gold leaf trim the condition is outstanding, with only a single trivial 1.5" crack inconspicuously located by the handle and a minor chip on the end of the spout, both easily restored if one felt the need. Height 10.75".

The finest Liverpool pieces were custom-ordered, often as presentation pieces. The large-sized presence of the owner's initials, gold leaf, unusual size and heavy construction clearly mark this as such an example. The legend "Success to the Eliza," suggests it may have been presented to the owner or master of that ship.

Why was a jug with such apparently contradictory images commissioned? It seems likely that the owner was a former loyalist who retained a love of the Mother Country but who had embraced his role in the fledgling American Republic. A most unusual piece, worthy of an advanced collection of Liverpool and other early ceramics. Ex-personal collection of Rex Stark.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
