    Description

Andrew Jackson: Rare Campaign Snuff Box.. First Example We Have Offered. 2 3/4" papier -mache lacquered snuff box with the image based on an engraving by James Barton Longacre in 1828, from a painting done at the Hermitage, from life, by Ralph Earl in 1826. The box, most certainly issued during the 1828 campaign, has a crisp clear image of Jackson and is finely detailed, and was possibly made by Stobwasser in Germany. There is some light typical crazing, but no loss. The top is snuggly in place, which we did not attempt to open. As mentioned, this is the first example we have ever offered, or know of being offered at auction. The chance of acquiring another example in the near future seems unlikely.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
