Andrew Jackson: Fantastic Octagonal Plate. Collectors sometimes wonder when the first true presidential campaign occurred. Some say 1824, others 1828. There is no question things really took off in 1828, but 1824 produced some campaign items and this 8" plate is proof of that. It is not that unusual to see blue feathering on plates of this period, but octagonal plates are quite unusual. This one has a large rust transfer of Andrew Jackson, who happened to be the front-runner for the Presidency in the election of 1824. It reads: "Genl. Jackson, Hero of America. The Year 1824". Its production coincided with the visit of the Marquis de Lafayette to U. S. shores in the 1824-1825. Jackson partisans no doubt wanted to take advantage of the hoopla over the Revolutionary War hero's visit and had "companion" pieces produced for Jackson, a native born hero. Unlike some transfer images of Jackson that look like Lafayette, this one is readily identifiable as Old Hickory. It is in mint condition and a great piece.
