    Description

    "O Captain! My Captain!"

Abraham Lincoln: Ship's Figure Head. Carved and painted 19th century ship's figure head made of pine, featuring a Lincolnesque figure. It measures 33" tall, 21" wide and 10" deep. Like most wooden figures, it has probably been repainted on more than one occasion. Generally in excellent condition and a wonderful piece of Americana. We are reminded of one 1860 campaign token which touts Lincoln as "The Man That Can Split Rails or Guide the Ship of State." In the wake of his assassination, Walt Whitman composed an elegy titled "O Captain! My Captain!" Though Whitman did not think highly of the work, it was immensely popular. When he delivered one of his Lincoln lectures, Whitman typically closed the presentation with a recitation of the poem. "My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;/ My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse or will;/ The ship is anchored safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;/ From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won;/ Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!/ But I, with mournful tread,/ Walk the deck my captain lies/ Fallen cold and dead."

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
