Description

Abraham Lincoln: Life Mask by Leonard W. Volk. 8" x 10" x 5" life mask of the beardless Lincoln, originally modeled and cast by Leonard Wells Volk in the spring of 1860. Volk also modeled Lincoln's hands and did a plaster bust. With the exception of the so-called "nude" bust, it is extremely difficult to date such castings with any degree of certainty. This particular example is neither signed or dated. It appears to be made of plaster with a copper "armor" coating. The copper finish comes to the surface at various high points. The overall finish is a pleasing dark green. There is a wire loop affixed to the rear, at the top, but it appears to have been glued on, so may not be appropriate for hanging. Of the many examples we have seen, either bronze or plaster, this is one of the more attractive ones and quite singular in view of its composition. It is also noteworthy for its provenance, namely Gideon Welles and his descendents, which suggests it may be one of Volk's earlier examples. Numerous Lincoln relics were preserved by Welles and passed on to his family.
