Abraham Lincoln: Figural Eagle Torch on Original Pole with Flag. Two-sided brass eagle in-the-round, attached to a wire bracket which allows it to swing freely when carried in a parade. It is attached to the original wooden pole measuring 60" in height (the overall height is 69"). The torch itself has no dents or split seams. There are traces of the original gilded surface, but it has acquired a deep patina over the years. Carbon deposits, notably on the tall burners, indicate it actually saw a good deal of use. Attributed by Collins to the election of 1860, we have long felt it was used by the "War Eagles" marching club in 1864. This specimen has a 34-star flag attached (January 29, 1861 to June 20, 1863) which, in our opinion, may call into question the 1860 attribution, although the torch may well have been employed during both elections. The flag is worn and tattered but, for the most part, intact.

This wonderful torch, the only one we have ever encountered in this form, was one of the signature pieces in the collection of one of the founding fathers of political collecting, Judge Lynn B. Griffith (APIC #229). For decades it stood proudly in the corner of his living room next to the Douglas portrait flag which also appears in this auction. Judge Griffith would forever change the political hobby when he helped bring to auction the superb collection of the late Western Pennsylvania funeral director Jack Martin in the late 1960s. This was the first time that political material achieved substantial prices at auction, and the Martin sales stimulated a new wave of interest in collecting campaign memorabilia.

Heritage is honored to have been entrusted by Lynn's family with the presentation at auction of some of his most cherished pieces.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
