Abraham Lincoln: Eagle Figural Campaign Torch. 8.5" x 9.5" brass figural eagle torch, in the round. It has the original mounting bracket and two long wick-holders. The kerosene was housed in the eagle's wings. It is the cataloger's opinion that these were used by the Lincoln marching club, the War Eagles, in the election of 1864. They were in part inspired by "Old Abe, the War Eagle", the famous mascot of a Wisconsin regiment. There are three indentations on the wings and body, but these appear on one side only. The other side is undamaged. The brass collar or fitting at the bottom of the bracket is bent, split at the seam and retains evidence of a prior solder repair. None of the seams in the eagle have split. They are totally intact. Quite nice.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
