    Description

Abraham Lincoln: A Unique Set of Three Ceramic ABC Plates. Although they carry no maker's mark, these are almost certainly by the same company that made the more familiar ABC mugs and saucers with a different portrait of Lincoln. This much scarcer style presumably appeared near the end of the Civil War, as they feature an image of Lincoln from a photograph taken by Berger in 1864. While it was tempting to offer these as three separate lots, we ultimately deemed it a shame to break up this remarkable assemblage in three different colors. All are essentially in choice condition. The black-and-white version is the boldest, but the red and white one is in equal condition, but simply manufactured with a less vivid image. The blue-and-white example is similarly choice but has various small blue marks, including four darker ones on the forehead and several light ones in the field, which occurred in manufacture. Diameter of each 6 3/4". It is hard to imagine that one could ever again duplicate this rare set. From the Edward C. Gillette Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
