    Description

Abraham Lincoln: 1864 Folk Art Campaign Sword. Most unusual M1860 sword and scabbard. The sword is tightly wedged into the scabbard whose central section is composed of tin sheeting welded to the brass tip and top fitting. A Republican partisan, way back when, has inscribed one side with the words "Lincoln & Union in 1864" followed by a curlicue. The lettering is pin-prick style, filled in with red paint. We assume the maker used tin sheeting rather than the original steel, as steel was not pliable enough or conducive to this method of inscription, similar to that done on pie-safe doors. The grip is leather wrapped in wire, apparently all original. A red, white and blue cord is wrapped around the handle and is likewise of the period. Likely carried in a parade by a Union veteran, disabled or not, during the campaign of 1864.
