Abraham Lincoln: 1863 New York Political Broadside. The off-year elections of 1863 were critical to the Lincoln administration and their conduct of the war. The President was criticized by opponents of the Emancipation Proclamation and those who felt the war was either not winable or worth the blood and treasure. This 19.5" x 25" broadside was issued in New York City and urged voters of New York State, especially so-called War Democrats, to sustain the President. "While our brave soldiers, of your own blood and kindred, are fighting in the field for the Union, let your votes be recorded in the same glorious cause at home." Its map and charts chronicle the success of the war effort, showing how rebel territory and population under its control have been gradually reduced. It singles out New York Governor Horatio Seymour for ridicule when "he threatened the administration with rebellion in the north" in a post-draft riots July 4th speech. It has normal folds, some damp stains and loss, as shown.
