    Description

Theodore Roosevelt: Hybrid Bull Moose Teddy Bear. By the time Teddy Roosevelt was running as the Progressive Bull Moose candidate in 1912, the teddy bear fad had waned to a certain degree. TR now exclaimed: "I feel like a Bull Moose!" Accordingly, toy makers complied and came up with this hybrid animal. It has the body of a teddy bear and the head of a bull moose. Bullwinkle, for want of a better name, is 13" tall with jointed arms and legs made of fuzzy brown cloth stretched over composition parts. The head is also made of a plaster-like composition material. The back of the head has raised letters: "E I H C[opyright] 1912". It appears to be stuffed with excelsior material. Light overall aging and soiling. Generally, quite nice. After TR's defeat in 1912, it was likely placed in a box with the other "toys in the attic". This is the first example we have been privileged to offer. From the Warren G. Lee Collection.
