Theodore Roosevelt: A Most Unusual Large American Indian Beaded Bottle Honoring the President. While flags and other patriotic motifs are often found on American Indian beadwork of the Reservation period, we cannot recall having seen another example mentioning a U.S. president by name. It also carries two dates, 1901 and 1904. Roosevelt ascended to the presidency when McKinley was shot in 1901, and was elected in his own right in 1904.

When the consignor purchased this item some years ago, he was told that it had come from TR's secretary, and that it had been presented to Roosevelt by Geronimo when the chief attended the 1905 inauguration in Washington. There is no documentation to support this appealing story. However, there is nothing about the bottle itself or the beadwork which is inconsistent with that dating. Beaded bottles of this general type are typical American Indian crafts of this era.

The bottle is 11" tall including the beaded stopper. Condition is excellent but for some very minor wear on the bottom edge, mentioned for accuracy.
